Art Center College of Design has just held its degree show for students graduating in its summer trimester. The summer show is the second of three graduate shows held each year, with the final one will occur in December. The summer class is always the smallest, but interesting projects are always waiting for us as we visit Art Center’s Hillside campus in Pasadena.
Mazda MX-5 interior
Tarek Ashour’s thesis project imagines the next generation of Mazda’s MX-5 roadster reborn as an electric sports car. His goal was to redesign the interior to maintain a ‘raw analogue feeling’, even with a new drivetrain. His initial explorations began with a dissection of the instrument panel and interior volumes, searching for a light aesthetic. Ashour then arranged the IP elements and reduced its overall mass, centring the elements around the driver. The final IP design, along with other controls are oriented towards the driver, allowing fingertip controls and tight visual sightlines of instruments, allowing a maximum concentration on the road ahead.
