Just a few miles north of the flash bulbs and klieg lights of Cobo Hall is the Valade Gallery - a quiet, modest space on the first floor of the A. Alfred Taubman Center. This is where CCS (College for Creative Studies) is staging its January 2017 Transportation Design Exhibition. For students who graduated in December 2016, this show will hopefully gain them added exposure as they embark upon their careers. For those yet to graduate, it's a preview of the work they will show at the school's next student exhibition, opening in May.
Even in this small show, it is easy for more revolutionary ideas to get drowned out by tried-and-tested forms. Highlighted here are three clay themes that are definitely not trying to blend into the background: these offer unique visions of the near future, and at the same time, tell us a great deal about what drives their creators. Click through [right] to see a set of images of these three concepts, followed by a gallery of more models and other work exhibited at the show by young designers at varying stages of their studies.
