Trend Snapshot 2: Geneva 2017

New Seat Ibiza rear lamp. A lovely example where the designers have resolved the surfaces, shutlines and graphics with the function for a sharp corner (for clean airflow breakaway) in a really satisfying way.

Audi Q8

Audi’s Q8 Sport concept now has six surfaces to transition from fender to hood. Then there’s four surfaces for the wheelarch. And we thought the Q7 was complex…

The Bentley Bentayga Mulliner Edition’s interior featured a Breitling Tourbillon watch that spins around every 15 minutes to activate the winding mechanism. That gold watch alone costs €125,000.

Emblems on the body were a key point of distinction for owners in the old days. Whether it came from GM’s Fisher Body Division, Briggs Motor Bodies, Mulliner or Karmann there would be a little badge somewhere, typically in the door shut area. That tradition survived with the Italian carrozzeria such as Pininfarina, Bertone, Touring or Zagato, who would display their emblem proudly somewhere on the body. Now we see that tradition reinvented with BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and JLR’s SVO division displaying their lightweight body construction as emblems on the inner B-pillar.

National flags are being used in ever-more subtle ways, such as the perforated British Union leather pattern in the Range Rover Velar or the door hinge of the Bentley EXP 12 concept. We also spotted the French Tricolour in the door panel and seat belt sleeve on the Citroen SpaceTourer 4x4 E concept.

Ds Models

Scale maquettes for Bertoni’s original long-tail DS and Opron’s Citroen SM were tucked away on the DS stand inside a glass display case.

New digital body graphics. The BMW i8 ‘Garage Italia CrossFade’ showed an intriguing paint finish that is inspired by the numerical influence in automotive design. It transitions from grey to blue along the bodyside using a series of triangular motifs. The triangles start off blue but then seamlessly shift to grey. The more you look, the more mesmerising it appears. Meanwhile, the facelifted Golf R showed a subtle transparent hexagonal decal along its flanks.

The Toyota i-Tril concept featured laser cut tyre patterns by Goodyear, with subtle parametric modelling in the treads. Sidewall edges were tinged in blue as well – neat.
