Purpose of the Role:     

  • “Design breath-taking products that tell the visual story of their function”
  • To create and deliver engaging and innovative design proposals for Exterior and Interior Colour and Material concepts
  • Research market sector, Lifestyles, Design and Social Trends for current and future programmes
  • Work closely with suppliers, developing materials to McLaren production test specifications
  • Liaise with McLaren designers, function groups, marketing and purchasing teams to ensure proposals are to required standard
  • To represent the Colour and Materials design team at technical/senior meetings as required
  • Must demonstrate a high level of self motivation, initiative, flexibility and determination to see a task through to completion working within tight deadlines
  • Maintain, define & develop the MSO colour book (materials library)
  • Design & deliver unique MSO Colour & material design solutions for all MSO products and cycle plan
  • Design & deliver unique MSO Colour & Material design solutions for X-carline series products, aligned with CMD core design pillars & design strategy
  • Engage with external suppliers to identify, create, and deliver colour & materials for MSO programmes.
  • Create, own & maintain DIR’s for all projects (design intent reports)
  • Attend cross functional team meetings to support the DIR maturation
  • Align with McLaren CMD process to ensure a consistent & quality output (following established gateways & deliverables)
  • Further develop communication and program alignment between Core CMD & MSO CMD
  • Liaise and harmonise trim design with MSO exterior paint and exterior themes, support in the sign off of MSO paint development

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Research and implement new Materials and Finishes for MSO content based on the defined Trim Level Strategy for all core programs
  • Design, Develop & implement bespoke MSO materials based on one-off customer requests
  • Maintain and own the MSO colour book
  • Create C&M Design Vision and Materials Variant List for all programs
  • Create and deliver the C&M Design Intent Report for all programs to document MSO specifications
  • Complete inputs to Marketing Features List
  • Deliver Target samples and delivery of Master Samples for all colours & materials

Required Knowledge Skills & Experience:

  • A University Degree in Art and Design or equivalent, with extensive experience as a Colour and Material Designer
  • Solid OEM experience working in a design department of an Automotive company
  • Highly creative with excellent colour vision, colour harmony and an intuitive understanding of perceived value and craftsmanship
  • Significant knowledge of automotive/industrial colours and materials 
  • Presentation skills to explain and express design intention
  • High Level of competence in using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Microsoft Office
  • Strong project planning/management skills would be beneficial
