Genesis surprised us all on New Year’s Eve with the release of some more images of the production SUV GV80, and it looks a lot like the concept
With hours left on the clock for the year 2019, Genesis dropped some images of the GV80 and it looks a lot like the concept GV80 we covered on CDN back in 2017.
Genesis’ bespoke “Athletic Elegance” design language is much in evidence here, apparently making a successful transition from the sedans, already in production, through the concept phase and now into production.
“GV80 allows us to expand our definition of Athletic Elegance design language to a new typology, while retaining sublime proportionality and sophistication of form,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Executive Vice President, Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group.
The mask of the GV80 is largely unchanged from the concept, with prominent horizontal quad headlights, and a large “crest grille”, the heraldic symbol that, along with the headlamps, makes up a strong DRG for the brand.
Along the side, the parabolic character line, already prominent on the sedans, leads the eye along the flanks of the vehicle, with flares over the wheels and horizontal wrap-around elements from the head and tail lights.
The interior emphasises openness, a commanding position for the driver, and a minimalist approach to detailing. Strong horizontals at the IP draw the eye laterally across the interior. Technology, is advanced, and subtly displayed in touch screens and a minimal of control buttons.
The GV80 will be released in South Korea this month with an international rollout shortly thereafter. We may see it in Geneva, if Genesis chooses that show to announce their rumoured expansion into Europe this year. If not, we will almost certainly see it at the New York show, where concept was revealed three years ago.
