The stocky two-seater sportscar from 1969 is getting a new look

Bertone is due to reveal a new concept as an homage to the Gandini-designed Autobianchi A112 Runabout. It will be unveiled on 29th October, the same date it was originally shown at the 1969 Turin auto show.

Bertone says the visionaries behind the company, Jean-Franck and Mauro Ricci, “are committed to preserving the essence of this iconic design through a modern interpretation.”

The new model also draws inspiration from other Bertone designs including the Fiat X1/9 but also racing boats of that era. Teaser images suggest the proportions are very similar to the original, particularly the distinctive kammtail, long nose and flared wheel arches.

The redesign was led by Andrea Mocellin, who worked more recently on the GB110 hypercar and since March this year has been (officially) running his own studio in Munich. “The Runabout is a design object with the purest geometry you can imagine in car design, because basically, it is made of only two lines,” Mocellin says. ”At the same time, it is built for the pleasure of driving and as a celebration of the Italian tradition of spectacular sports cars.”
