The new generation is described as “elegant and sporty”

It was the briefest of reveals for the new A6 sedan today, building on other recent updates from the four rings including the A5 e-hybrid and A6 avant.

Teasers were shown at the end of last week, focussing primarily on the light signature. This would tee things up nicely for the official reveal (a pre-recorded ‘livestream’) where attention went exclusively towards the exterior design and indeed the head and tail lamps. It makes sense as these are arguably the most notable deviation from the prior generation.

“You can tell by the first look that it has gorgeous proportion, is very extended and the architecture is this of a typical audi sedan,” said exterior designer Francesco D’Amore as part of the launch film. “You have the big wheels sitting below these wide muscles. You have the long wheelbase, the stretched hood.”

Take note too of the inherent slipperyness of a sedan. The new A6, in this bodyshape, has a drag coefficient of 0.23 which Audi says is the best of any combustion-engine production model in Audi history. For context, the e-tron GT has a Cd of 0.24.

The notchback rear “contributes significantly” to this score, Audi explains: “The sharp curvature of the tailgate [and] hollow groove in front of it creates an optimal stall… The large, wide diffuser, [creates] an ideal balance between lift at the rear axle and drag.”

D’Amore hammered the point home: “What makes the A6 sedan so special is the aerodynamics. We spent a lot of time designing those surfaces.”

Although the interior was not included in the official reveal, the images that follow reveal a large curved ‘panoramic touch display’ and auxilliary passenger screen. Elsewhere there is relatively restrained use of ambient lighting – accenting the cabin in key areas and not throughout as many others do.

Orders are due to open imminently.
