Best Innovation - Li Yimeng, Tongji University
Director of global advanced design at Mercedes-Benz, Steffen Köhl, was impressed by the “unique design solutions that expressed modernity and functionality,” adding that he approved of the “very well made presentation drawings.” Sooshin Choi added that “the design takes a heavy industrial vehicle to the next level with highly innovative design.” Brian Pour of IAC was on hand to present the award on the night.
Best Virtual Design - Li Fengshun and Xiao Shijuan, Wuhan University of Technology
Lou Tik, general manager and design director of the JAC Italy Design Center, commented on the “excellent renders” here, with Geely’s Guy Burgoyne adding that the project combined a “wonderful mix of tool knowledge with interesting design.” Zhang Fan, director, conceptual and styling design at GAC, was also convinced, saying “this car looks like it was right in a movie scene; the designer showed every dramatic scenario.” The award was presented to the duo by Andreas Wolfsgruber, chief designer at Magna.
Best Design in Harmony with China’s Heritage - Hou Pengpeng and Hou Lulu, Huazhong University of Science and Technology
Guy Burgoyne noted that “every detail of this project has a China element, depth and subtlety, good graphics and stance. It’s both historic and fresh.” Steffen Köhl added that this project offered “convincing design solutions with strong graphical and architectural details.” Zhang Fan was also impressed, saying “the car looks very original. It does remind me of Chinese aesthetics.” Daniel Darancou of CH-Auto made the award presentation.
Most Successful School - China Central Academy of Fine Arts
This award recognizes the institution that has entered the most prize winners and finalists into this year’s competition. Without great design education, there is noone to nurture the next generation of design talent that will shape the vehicles of the future, and this award reflects the huge importance of the role that academic institutions in the car-design process. The award was collected by Wang XuanZheng on behalf of everyone at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.
Student Design of the Year - Li Yimeng, Tongji University
And finally, the most important award of the evening was presented to Li Yimeng. Having already won the Best Innovation category, this project rose to the top thanks to its dramatic design that applied inspiration from NASA spacecraft to a construction vehicle, while also incorporating drone technology that placed the safety of the user as a priority. This impressively well-rounded project is a deserved winner and a credit to Tongji University, too.
