Polestar has appointed Philipp Römers as its new head of design, replacing Maximilian Missoni who headed up the Swedish EV brand design department for six years.
The move will come as a surprise to many in the industry. During his tenure, Missoni established Polestar as a leader in design-led electric vehicles, characterised by minimalist luxury and innovative performance. His work garnered widespread recognition, including multiple Car Design Review awards, most notably for the Polestar 02 concept and Polestar 4.
However, Missoni was not present at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2024, which saw the brand unveil an amped-up version of the roadster, complete with large rear spoiler and prominent graphics.
Speaking exclusively to Car Design News, MIssoni said: “It’s been a very tough decision since we created the brand together. However, after setting up the Polestar design team, creating the design language and DNA and completing a full generation of cars I felt the time is right to face a new challenge and hand over the team that I care so much about. I will definitely miss them but I also know they will be in good hands.”
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said: “Max’s leadership and vision were instrumental in defining Polestar’s design DNA, which seamlessly blends aesthetics, luxury, and performance. His innovative approach earned him accolades and helped position Polestar as a true design icon in the electric vehicle space. We wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”
Römers, who brings over 25 years of experience, joins Polestar from Audi where he was the head of exterior design overseeing models such as the A3, A6 and Q8, as well as concept vehicles like the Prologue and the AI:CON.
Of Römers, Ingenlath highlighted his modern perspective and deep experience in the luxury performance segment: “Philipp’s approach to design will be key as we evolve our model lineup and continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible with electric vehicle design.”
