Mayer links up with another ex-Volvo colleague in Robin Page, who took the top job at Bentley a year ago this month
Exterior design specialist T. Jon Mayer will be swapping Gothenburg for Crewe, taking on a new role as head of design operations at Bentley. He will begin on 15 July having announced his departure from Volvo in February, reuinting with an old friend, colleague (and now boss) Robin Page who left Volvo early in 2023.
The design operations job is a varied one: Mayer’s teams will include project management, digital surfacing, studio engineering and visualisation. Beyond that, he will lead the daily business operations and succeeds Christian Schreiber who has moved to Wolfsburg as head of design strategy, design modelling and digitalisation at Volkswagen. Mayer will also be part of the leadership team at Bentley, reporting directly to Page.
Prior to the new gig, T. Jon had most recently served as head of exterior design at Volvo Cars, a position he held since 2021 when Maximilian Missoni moved exclusively to Polestar. Mayer is credited with working on models like the 2012 Ford Fusion during his early career in Dearborn, and the Volvo Concept Coupe that would go on to preface the Polestar 1.
Most recently, he spearheaded the exterior development of the Volvo EX30 and all upcoming fully electric models. All in, Mayer spent nearly 13 years with Volvo across Gothenburg and California.
After a degree in Industrial and Product design at Carnegie Mellon University, Mayer would go on to study at ArtCenter, gaining additional honours in Transportation Design.
