Michelin Challenge Bibendum has been running since 1998. It's an initiative, backed-up by an annual global summit, established by the Michelin Group that promotes clean, safe, connected and affordable mobility by bringing information to political and industrial decision-makers.
For the first time in 15 years, Michelin Challenge Design, the firm's premier global transportation design competition, was asked to exhibit at the most-recent Challenge Bibendum summit, held in Chengdu, China.
To mark the addition of the Challenge Design program to Challenge Bibendum, work submitted from both the 2012 and 2014 design challenges was displayed.
In another first, Michelin Challenge Design completed its inaugural sponsored project with two Chinese Universities - Wuhan University of Technology and Tongji University, Shanghai. Called Michelin Challenge Design - Chinese Universities, both schools submitted designs related to the 2014 Challenge theme: Driven/Undriven: The Duality of Tomorrow's Automobile.
The students were asked to design a vehicle with unique features and capabilities to engage its passengers when driving in autonomous mode. They were also asked to create a design that transforms the vehicle into an extension of its owner's lifestyle, and allows driving pleasure to be experienced in new ways.
First place was awarded to Tianshu Hao. His single-person vehicle (above) was designed with the more mature motorist in mind, helping to improve mobility for someone of senior years.
Second place was awarded to Wu Shan, whose project was aimed at those with small children, while third was given to Meiyong Liu, with a project that combined travel with exercise. All three students are from Tongji University.
